Matijevic had a long, pain stricken, difficult road to recovery as the accident did far more damage than anyone could have known at the time of the accident which left Matijevic to fight this battle alone for a long time.
It was to be the last time the original lineup of Steelheart would ever perform together. Matijevic miraculously found the strength to walk off the stage and was immediately taken to the hospital. The outcome of the accident was a broken nose, cheekbone, jaw, twisted spine, and severe memory loss. Matijevic tried to dodge the 1000 pound piece of equipment to no avail it hit him in the back of the head, driving him face first into the stage. Matijevic decided to climb a lighting truss which was for some reason improperly secured, so as Matijevic climbed the rig it broke free. Steelheart was performing “Dancing in the Fire” from the ‘ Tangled in Reins’ album when the accident occurred. On the last leg of the tour they were invited to perform one last show as the opening act for the band Slaughter. Steelheart, led by Miljenko ‘Mili’ Matijevic, arguably one of the best male rock vocalists to ever grace the stage, miraculously survived the tragedy - however the band Steelheart as we all knew it died that night.Īfter successful tours of Asia and Europe, Steelheart flew home to tour the U.S. Sleaze Roxx reported as follows with respect to Matijevic‘s horrific accident back in 1992: “On Octo(Halloween night), exactly 19 years ago tonight in Denver Colorado, a horrible tragedy took down one of Rock’s premiere bands during a live concert. Wikipedia indicates that Steelheart have released four albums to date consisting of Steelheart (1990), Tangled In Reins (1992), I asked him if he had anything coming up and he said, “OOH yeah! New album coming SOON”! … and I can’t wait to hear it! Anyone who has seen Steelheart in concert knows that Miljenko absolutely kills it, live! He doesn’t back down from a note!”
He SEEMS unapproachable, but he’s always been nothing but nice (and funny) to me and and he’s an INCREDIBLE singer.ĭid you know that after his stage accident years ago, he lost a lot of memory? He even had to RE-learn how to sing. “I spoke to Miljenko after I saw him kicking back having a cigar and a drink, away from everyone on a rainy day. Nov.Sleaze Roxx contributor, writer and photographer Christopher Carroll attended the Monsters of Rock Cruise West also known as Monsterwood from October 1 to 5, 2016 and reported as follows earlier today in his Facebook group titled Your Backstage Pass (with slight edits): 04 - Bourbon Street Night Club - New Port Richey, FL (w/ NAKED BEGGARS) 03 - Bourbon Street Night Club - New Port Richey, FL Three hours of live concerts, interviews, Hong Kong unplugged, bootlegs, all the STEELHEART videos and more."
